Scheduled for April 24, 2018 in honor of National Minority Health Month, the ceremony starts at 10AM and will be held in DOH-Orange’s Lake Ellenor Auditorium, 6101 Lake Ellenor Drive, Orlando, FL 32809.

The 2018 Alfred L. Bookhrdt, MD award recipient is Ann Ashley-Gilbert, MD from the Altamonte Women’s Center.  Dr. Ashley-Gilbert is recognized for her dedication to serving residents of Orange County for over 38 years and providing obstetrical and gynecological care to migrant and poor women of Central Florida.

April is National Minority Health Month and DOH-Orange joins the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Minority Health in raising awareness of the health status of racial and ethnic minority populations in the U.S.  The theme for 2018 is Partnering for Health Equity” which highlights partnerships at the federal, state, local, tribal and territorial levels that help reduce disparities in health and health care.

The annual Alfred L. Bookhardt, M.D. Award for Health Equity was created by the DOH-Orange as a way of recognizing an Orange County physician for their dedication and commitment to increasing access to health care with a goal of achieving health equity in Central Florida. This award honors Dr. Alfred L. Bookhardt (1928-2014) who began practicing in Orlando during the Civil Rights Movement. He treated African-American patients who were refused care by white physicians. He also co-founded the Central Florida Medical Society and Guardian Care, the first long-term care facility for African-Americans in Orlando.
