Bureau of Violence and Injury Prevention

Florida Department of Health in Orange County

Injuries and violence know no boundaries - they impact people of all ages, races, and economic backgrounds. Shockingly, unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death among Orange County, Florida residents between the ages of 1 and 54, ranking fourth overall. The good news is that many of these injuries are preventable1.

Here in Orange County, the Bureau of Violence & Injury Prevention has been created within the Division of Community Health Promotion. This program oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of a spectrum of prevention activities. These include critical areas such as water safety/drowning prevention, infant mortality prevention (safe sleep), the Florida Healthy Baby Initiative, human trafficking, domestic and sexual violence, suicide prevention, healthy aging, and general safety encompassing motor vehicle safety, brain injuries, and opioid overdoses. The Bureau studies ways to prevent injuries and violence and puts research into action with our Orange County residents and community partners to prevent them.
