The Florida Department of Health in Orange County (DOH-Orange) urges residents to prepare and get a plan in place in the event Tropical Storm Erika affects the area. Now is the time for residents to take a few simple safety steps to keep their families prepared and safe during a severe weather emergency.

“The health department works diligently to serve the community and helps maintain the public healthy and safe during emergencies,” said Dr. Kevin Sherin, director and health officer for the Florida Department of Health in Orange County. “DOH-Orange partners with Orange County Government for emergency preparedness responses, staffing special needs shelters and on public health messaging.”

Emergency Management officials urge residents to prepare an emergency supply kit and family communication plan.

Put together abasic emergency supply kit which should include the following

recommended items:

• Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, drinking and

Sanitation

• Food, at least three-day supply of non-perishable food
• Pet food and extra water for your pet
• Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First Aid Kit
• Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation
• Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger
• Prescription medications and glasses
• Oxygen (O2) for those who are oxygen dependent.
• Infant formula and diapers
• Cash or traveler's checks and change

Develop and document plans for your specific risks

• Protect yourself and family with a Family Emergency Plan
• Be sure to plan for locations away from home. Be familiar with your nearest shelter (general shelters, special-needs shelters and pet- friendly shelters)
• Business owners and site locations should create plans
• Make sure schools and daycares have School Emergency Plans
• Pet owners should have plans to care for their animals.

• Local Emergency Management Office
• County Law Enforcement, County Public Safety Fire/Rescue
• State, County and City/Town Government Offices
• Local Hospitals and Local Utilities
• Local American Red Cross
• Local TV Stations and Local Radio Stations

Residents should become aware of the locations of their closest county emergency shelters, as well as have a plan in place for family members who may have special needs.
