The Florida Department of Health in Orange County Healthiest Weight Initiative is proud to announce the winners of the “Health Meet Arts” Poster Contest. The winning artists are Vallolet, age 4; Natalia, age 7; Tyrone, age 10 and Paradise, age 12.

Each winner received a certificate of participation and will be featured in the next issue of Better Health for Orange County DOH-Orange newsletter. A poster has been created with all four drawings and is being exhibited at the AllGems Foundation, the Howard Phillips Center for Children and Families, and DOH-Orange Lake Ellenor Office.

The winners were interviewed about their posters and what health means to them. Responses ranged from reading, and playing outside with friends to eating things such as apples and beets.

DOH-Orange Healthiest Weight Initiative partnered with AllGems Foundation, and the Howard Phillips Center for Children and Families to host the “Health Meet Arts” poster contest during their Fifth Annual AllGems Holiday Party in December 2015. During the event forty one drawings were collected and 200 Frisbee and jump ropes were given to the children along with educational materials.

“Congratulations to the winners, they are on the right path for good health. Healthy eating in childhood is important for proper growth and development and can prevent health problems such as obesity, dental cavities, iron deficiency, and osteoporosis,” said Dr. Kevin M. Sherin, director of the Florida Department of Health in Orange County. “I encourage parents to continue eating healthy and be active as a family to prevent diseases.”

The early years of a child’s life are very important for his or her health and development. Healthy development means that children are able to grow up where their social, emotional and educational needs are met. Having a safe and loving home and spending time with family―playing, singing, reading, and talking―are very important. Proper nutrition, exercise, and rest also can make a big difference.
