Zika fever is a mild febrile illness caused by a mosquito-borne virus similar to those that cause Dengue and Chikungunya virus infection. Approximately 80 percent of people that become infected with Zika virus have no symptoms. Zika infection rarely triggers paralysis (i.e., Guillain-Barré Syndrome).  

Prior to 2015, outbreaks had previously been reported in Africa, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. More recently outbreaks have been widely reported across South and Central America and the Caribbean. Local transmission has been identified in small focal areas in Florida.
