DOH-Orange Awarded a Ryan White Part D Grant to Improve Care for HIV-infected Women, Infants, Children, and Youth

September 19, 2017

The Florida Department of Health in Orange County (DOH-Orange) is proud to announce that it has been selected to receive a Ryan White Part D grant from the Health Resources & Services Administration, which is an agency of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Totaling $829,678 per year for the next three years, the grant will improve access to primary medical care for low-income, medically underserved HIV-infected women, infants, children, and youth (WICY).

"We are very pleased to receive the Ryan White Part D grant to provide important services to this vulnerable community,” said Dr. Kevin Sherin, Director and Health Officer for DOH-Orange. “We look forward to identifying more ways to partner and to continue assisting our community with vital HIV services."

Administered by DOH-Orange’s Sunshine Care Center, the goal of the grant is to serve up to 885 HIV-infected WICY annually through family-centered, culturally and linguistically competent, health care services.

As the largest public health center in Orange County for HIV/AIDS services, the Sunshine Care Center has served Central Florida since 1989.  It serves as a key point of entry through which counseling and testing programs are provided as well as epidemiological surveillance is conducted. Besides serving individuals in Orange County, the grant funds will assist individuals in Osceola, Seminole, Lake, and Brevard counties.

In addition to the Ryan White Part D grant, DOH-Orange receives Ryan White Part A, B, and C grant funding, which enables the Sunshine Care Center to provide HIV/AIDS care services to over 2,000 individuals each year. That includes uninsured and under-insured women, men, infants, youth, minority populations, and families infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS.
