Pools and Spas

Environmental Health Program

To protect public health the Department of Health regulates public pool and bathing areas under Chapter 64E-9, Florida Administrative Code, through the issuance of operating permits and inspections. This program does not include the many private swimming pools in our community.

We have more than 2,500 permitted swimming pools, spas, and water attractions. One of the newer features are interactive water activities - various types of fountains that people can play in. Apartment complexes and condominiums are also included.

All facilities are inspected at least twice a year to assure:

  • Proper disinfection of pool water
  • Chemical balance of pool water
  • Proper maintenance of filtration equipment
  • Safety equipment maintained and on site

Natural bathing areas must submit monthly bacteriological water samples for laboratory analysis. In addition to water safety, it is important to understand the dangers of drowning. For more information on drowning prevention please visit the Florida Health Drowning Prevention.
