Infectious Disease Services

Infectious Diseases Services conducts investigation, surveillance, prevention, and control of communicable diseases of public health importance.  Services include:

Epidemiology

The Epidemiology (Epi) Program seeks to prevent disease transmission in the community through surveillance, contact investigations, and education. Staff investigate reportable diseases to determine the source of the disease, the time and mode of transmission, and the number of people potentially exposed or impacted. There are currently more than 80 reportable conditions excluding HIV/AIDS, TB, and STDs.

Sexually Transmitted Disease Program

The Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD) Program works to control transmission through four major avenues:

  • Education of at risk persons on the modes of disease transmission and the means for reducing the risk of transmission by changing sexual behaviors
  • Detection of infection in persons without symptoms, and those who are who are unlikely to seek diagnostic and treatment services.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of persons who are infected.
  • Evaluation, treatment and counseling of sex partners of persons with a Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD).

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

In an effort to eliminate HIV infections, the Florida Department of Health in Orange County (DOH-Orange) is now offering Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) medication.

HIV/AIDS Program

The Florida Department of Health in Orange County is proud to offer Medical Care, Case Management, and other services through the Sunshine Care Center.

Tuberculosis (TB) Program

The Tuberculosis Program provides services to diagnosis and treat persons with active TB disease and persons identified with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI). Services include comprehensive case management of active cases of TB, investigation, testing of those exposed to an active case of TB, along with direct observed medication therapy of active TB cases. In addition, the program acts as a gateway to treatment for those who have been determined through testing to have LTBI. Treatment for persons identified with LTBI will be crucial to achieving the ultimate goal of eliminating TB as a public health problem in Florida.

Area 7 HIV & AIDS Program

The Area 7 HIV & AIDS Program at the Florida Department of Health in Orange County provides technical assistance to support the HIV/AIDS Care and Prevention Education services offered at the Florida Department of Health facilities and Community Based Organizations located in the following counties: Brevard, Orange, Osceola, and Seminole.
